6th and 7th Grade-English Language Arts





6th Grade

We have been working hard laying the foundation for the year in our learning. 


Students are using the CIA method, collect, interpret and apply, to analyze a novel. We have started our first book, "The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin. We will continue this through November.




The standards we will be focusing on this quarter are:

RL 6.1 Cite evidence from the text and make logical inferences.

RL 6.2 Summarize the text.

RL 6.3 Analyze ideas develop and interact over the course of the text.

L7.4 Determine and clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases by using context clues, analyzing meaningful word parts, and consulting general and specialized reference materials, as appropriate.

The 6th grade students will begin working out of their Literature books. The Standards we are focusing on for the 2nd quarter are:

R6.4 Figurative Language

R6.2 Theme/Central Idea

R6.4 Vocabulary


7th Grade

Students are using the CIA method, collect, interpret and apply, to analyze a novel. We have started our first book, "Freak the Mighty" by Rodman Philbrick. We will continue this through November.




The standards we will be focusing on this quarter are:

RL 7.1 Cite evidence from the text and make logical inferences.

RL 7.2 Summarize the text.

RL 7.3 Analyze ideas develop and interact over the course of the text.

L7.4 Determine and clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases by using context clues, analyzing meaningful word parts, and consulting general and specialized reference materials, as appropriate.

The 7th grade students will begin working on a writing curriculum called, Units of Study. Narrative writing will be our first area of emphasis in this unit. Students have been assigned to read a chapter book at their grade level or above for each month and complete a book review on their own. The first review is due before break on Dec. 18th. The book review sheets are available in room 102 on the wall behind the door.  Students will be able to identify all the areas of plot on their review.
